One of my co-founders, Gabe, and I grew up together, playing soccer in Western Colorado. We were both adventurous and outdoorsy and had this amazing playground of mountains and rivers where we’d go camping with our families.

We stayed in touch over the years, always bouncing entrepreneurial ideas off but pursued pretty different paths. I worked in finance, and Gabe dove into professional guiding, working for a leading active luxury travel company. That’s where he met our other co-founder, Trevor.

Moterra is very much a side hustle becoming the main hustle story. They were living in Jackson Hole, so we started with one van based there and grew the business mostly by word of mouth. Then, when Covid hit, all these reservations got canceled at first. But as people started getting cabin fever, camper vans became the perfect escape. We went from a small team to 25 or 30 people pretty fast and had this huge demand that required basically zero marketing.

We knew it wouldn’t last, so by 2022, we got proactive about our marketing efforts, and started focusing on streamlining our operations. Around that same time, I was watching many peers in my very tech-oriented community making impressive progress with AI and began experimenting myself.

I’ve always been passionate about productivity, and Gemini helps me overcome that blank-page problem. It reduces a lot of the friction I feel as an entrepreneur, allowing me to pick up momentum in a way I never would have been able to before.

Fast forward to today and my AI-powered workflows have just expanded exponentially. I’m using Gemini in Google Docs to help edit blog posts and Gemini in Google Meet for capturing meeting notes, which is so convenient when you’re sharing information across seven different regions.

What I’m most excited about, though, is Google’s NotebookLM, which basically lets you use your own documents to ground an AI model to answer questions and provide summaries based on your own information. Having it integrated into Google Workspace really streamlines my workflow. We store all our handbooks in Workspace, like the ones our customer service and sales team reference for questions like ‘what’s the battery capacity on the van?’

Using NotebookLM, I want to create an internal chatbot that draws information from resources like these handbooks and that anyone on our team can query. I think this will be a massive unlock, relieving me and my co-founders from being a bottleneck for information-gathering.

I’m a techno-optimist at heart. Change is always hard, but in my humble opinion, embracing it is always the better move. And right now, AI is enabling me to do more of the work I want to do and really focus on where my passion lies: demystifying the outdoor experience for a wider audience.
