Supporting Responsible AI
With AI, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen our economies, drive breakthroughs in health and science, and strengthen our cybersecurity systems. We established the Digital Futures Project to support a range of independent thinkers working to understand and address the opportunities and challenges of AI.
Overview
Careful, consistent, and collaborative policies will drive even more stunning AI breakthroughs. And getting this right will benefit everyone.
– Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Google and Alphabet
AI has already begun to transform the ways we address some of society’s most pressing challenges – from the everyday to the extraordinary.
While AI has immense potential for good — from preventing disease, to making cities work better, and even predicting natural disasters – it also raises questions about potential impacts on global security, labor markets, governance and more. Answering these questions will require deep collaboration among industry, academia, governments and civil society.
To facilitate dialogue and understanding about how our society can both maximize AI progress and establish guardrails to mitigate its risks, Google launched the Digital Futures Project. Through this, we organize convenings, and provide platforms to discuss important topics such as security, fairness, content, the future of work, and public policy solutions that encourage responsible development of AI. Through grants provided by Google.org, we also support research from leading think tanks and academic institutions around the world.
The decisions we make today about how to develop, deploy, harness, or limit AI will have an impact for generations to come. Our hope is that the research and dialogue fostered through the Digital Futures Project will bring together the perspectives and expertise needed to shape global, pro-innovation frameworks that help unlock AI’s full potential for everyone.

Fostering Dialogue and Collaboration for a Responsible AI Future
At Google, realizing AI’s potential and making it helpful for everyone has always gone hand-in-hand with a commitment to its responsible development. Developing the appropriate standards, protocols, and governance for AI benefits from input from a broad spectrum of voices across industry, academia, governments, civil society, and beyond.
To support this work, the Digital Futures Project has convened experts from industry, civil society and academia to share their insights, findings, and expertise – so we can all advance this discussion, together.
